Family reunification to Denmark
Family reunification allows you to bring your family members to Denmark to live with you. To be eligible, you must be a Danish citizen, have a permanent residence permit, or be a refugee.
Common family members eligible for family reunification include:
- Spouse
- Registered partner
- Cohabiting partner
- Children under 18
- Parents
- Siblings of an unaccompanied minor
The process of family reunification involves:
- Eligibility Assessment: Determining if you and your family member meet the specific requirements for family reunification.
- Document Preparation: Gathering all necessary documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, and proof of financial support.
- Application Submission: Submitting the application to the Danish Immigration Service.
- Processing and Decision-Making: Waiting for a decision from the Danish Immigration Service.
Family reunification visa
A residence permit is a longer-term authorization to stay in Denmark. It allows you to live and work in the country for an extended period. To obtain a residence permit, you typically need to meet specific criteria, such as having a job offer, being a student, or being a family member of a Danish citizen or resident.
Visas
A visa is a short-term authorization to enter and stay in Denmark. It is usually granted for specific purposes, such as tourism, business, or visiting family and friends. Visas are typically valid for a limited period and do not allow you to work or study in Denmark.
How they work together:
- Visa-free travel and application: Citizens of certain countries, such as the US, can enter Denmark visa-free for up to 90 days. During this period, they can apply for a residence permit, for example, if they have a job offer, are enrolling in a study program or trying to obtain a residence permit through family reunification. It is important to note however, that visa free travel should not be abused with the sole purpose being to enter Denmark to gain long term residence permits.
- Temporary Visa: In some cases, you may need a temporary visa to enter Denmark while your residence permit application is being processed. This allows you to stay in the country legally while waiting for a decision.
Globe Advokater can help you with both visas and residence permits.
Processing time
At the moment, the processing time for an application for family reunification is 7 months from when the application is lodged with the Danish Immigration services.
