How to Apply for Asylum in Denmark
-
Initial Contact with the Authorities:
- Upon arrival in Denmark, you should immediately contact the Danish authorities, such as the police or the Danish Immigration Service (DIS).
- You will be registered as an asylum seeker and provided with basic necessities like food and shelter.
-
Asylum Interview:
- You will be interviewed by the Danish Immigration Service to determine your eligibility for asylum.
- During the interview, you will need to explain the reasons for your flight and provide evidence to support your claim.
-
Decision-Making Process:
- The Danish Immigration Service will assess your case and make a decision on whether to grant you asylum.
- The decision-making process can take several months.
What Happens After an Asylum Decision?
If Your Application is Approved:
- Residence Permit: You will be granted a residence permit, allowing you to live and work in Denmark.
- Integration Support: You may be offered integration programs to help you learn Danish and adapt to Danish society.
If Your Application is Rejected:
- Appeal: You can appeal the decision to the Immigration Appeals Board.
- Deportation: If your appeal is also rejected, you may be deported back to your home country.
Important Considerations:
- Legal Aid: You may be eligible for free legal aid to assist you with your asylum application.
- Humanitarian Grounds: In some cases, you may be granted asylum on humanitarian grounds, even if you do not meet the strict criteria for refugee status.
- Temporary Protection: In situations of mass displacement or conflict, Denmark may offer temporary protection to individuals from specific countries.
Seeking Legal Advice:
It is highly recommended to seek legal advice from an immigration lawyer to navigate the complex asylum process. An immigration lawyer can help you understand your rights, prepare your application, and represent you during the legal proceedings.

Denial of asylum to Denmark
If the Danish Immigration Services has rejected your application for asylum to Denmark, the case will automatically go in front of the Danish Immigration Appeals Board more particularly the Refugee Appeals Board.
In this case, you have the right to be represented by a lawyer that will plead your case in front of the board.
You have a right to choose your own lawyer in this process. If you don't wish to choose your own lawyer, the Danish Immigration Appeals Board will provide you with legal representation.
Costs are covered by Danish government
All expenses the lawyer incurs during the case will be paid by the Danish Immigration Appeals Board. Thus, you will not carry any of the costs related to the case.
