Family reunification to Denmark with a cohabiting partner
Are you in a relationship with a Danish resident?
If you are in a stable, committed relationship with a Danish resident, you may be eligible for a residence permit in Denmark.
To qualify, you and your partner must meet several requirements, including:
- Proof of relationship: You will need to provide evidence of your relationship, such as joint tenancy agreements, shared bank accounts, or joint travel documents.
- Sufficient income: Your partner must be able to financially support you and any dependents.
- Accommodation: You must have suitable accommodation in Denmark.
Requirements to be reunified with your partner
To be considered in a permanent cohabiting relationship, you and your partner must have lived together at the same address for at least 18 months.
Exceptions to the 18-month rule:

Financial Responsibility:
Your partner in Denmark needs to be able to financially support you if necessary. This means they must be able to cover your living expenses, such as rent and food.
Voluntary relationship:
To be eligible for a residence permit based on a relationship with a Danish citizen or resident, your relationship must be genuine and not solely for the purpose of obtaining a residence permit.
Key Factors Considered by the Danish Immigration Service:
- Voluntariness: Your relationship should be freely chosen and not forced or coerced.
- Authenticity: Your relationship should be based on genuine feelings and intentions.
- Stability: You and your partner should demonstrate a stable and committed relationship.
You need to be at least 24 years old
According to the 24 year requirement both parties in the relationship has to be above the age of 24 to qualify.
You need to have visited Denmark once
This is another requirement to be aware of.
Processing time
At current, the processing time is 7 months according to the Danish Immigration Service.
What type of residence permit can be granted?
If your application for family reunification is successful, you will initially receive a temporary residence permit that is usually valid for two years. After this period, you can apply to extend your stay, provided you continue to meet the eligibility criteria.
At the same time, the permit allows you to take up work in Denmark.
