You can regain your Danish citizenship if you were previously a Danish citizen and lost it due to the old Danish citizenship law. You must not have been sentenced to a prison sentence since losing your citizenship. If you were over 22 years old when you lost your citizenship and were born abroad, you must also have resided in Denmark for at least 3 months or a total of at least 1 year before turning 22.

To get your Danish citizenship back, you generally need to have:

  • Been a Danish citizen in the past.
  • Lost your citizenship because you applied for citizenship in another country before September 1, 2015.
  • Not been in prison since losing your citizenship.
  • Met certain residency requirements if you were born abroad and were over 22 when you lost your citizenship.

There are also additional requirements if you have children:

  • Your children must be under 18 and unmarried.
  • You must have custody of your child.
  • Your children cannot have been in prison.
  • If the child is adopted, the adoption must be legally valid in Denmark.

Important things to remember:

  • Deadline: You could only apply to regain your Danish citizenship between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2026.
  • Documentation: You need to submit a lot of documents with your application.
  • Fee: There is a fee to apply.
  • Processing time: It takes a long time to get a response to your application.

This is a very brief explanation, and there may be more nuances and exceptions. It is therefore important that you check the information with the authorities or consult a lawyer.

You likely lost your Danish citizenship if you applied for foreign citizenship before September 1, 2015. This is in accordance with the previously applicable § 7 of the Danish Citizenship Act. If you applied for foreign citizenship after that date, you have retained your Danish citizenship.

During the five-year period from July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2026, it is possible to regain Danish citizenship by submitting a written application to the Ministry of Immigration and Integration. Seeking assistance from a lawyer to handle the process might be an option.

A lawyer specializing in immigration law can be invaluable when you wish to regain your Danish citizenship. Here are some ways a lawyer can assist you:

  • Legal advice: A lawyer has in-depth knowledge of the applicable laws and regulations regarding citizenship. They can assess your specific situation and provide you with clear and precise advice on your options and the necessary steps you need to take.
  • Document collection: Gathering all the necessary documentation for a citizenship application can be challenging. A lawyer can help you identify which documents are required and how to obtain them.
  • Completing application forms: Application forms can be complex and require precise completion. A lawyer can ensure that all information is correct and complete, and that the application complies with all formal requirements.
  • Representation before the authorities: If questions or problems arise during the processing of your application, the lawyer can represent you before the Ministry of Immigration and Integration.
  • Case follow-up: The lawyer can follow up on your case and keep you updated on the progress.

Why choose a lawyer?

  • Expertise: Lawyers have specialized knowledge in a complex area, and they can help you navigate the legislation.
  • Experience: Lawyers often have experience with similar cases and can draw on their experience to assist you.
  • Efficiency: A lawyer can save you time and trouble by handling the legal work.
