Reacquisition of Danish citizenship
You can regain your Danish citizenship if you were previously a Danish citizen and lost it due to the old Danish citizenship law. You must not have been sentenced to a prison sentence since losing your citizenship. If you were over 22 years old when you lost your citizenship and were born abroad, you must also have resided in Denmark for at least 3 months or a total of at least 1 year before turning 22.
To get your Danish citizenship back, you generally need to have:
- Been a Danish citizen in the past.
- Lost your citizenship because you applied for citizenship in another country before September 1, 2015.
- Not been in prison since losing your citizenship.
- Met certain residency requirements if you were born abroad and were over 22 when you lost your citizenship.
There are also additional requirements if you have children:
- Your children must be under 18 and unmarried.
- You must have custody of your child.
- Your children cannot have been in prison.
- If the child is adopted, the adoption must be legally valid in Denmark.
Important things to remember:
- Deadline: You could only apply to regain your Danish citizenship between July 1, 2021, and June 30, 2026.
- Documentation: You need to submit a lot of documents with your application.
- Fee: There is a fee to apply.
- Processing time: It takes a long time to get a response to your application.
This is a very brief explanation, and there may be more nuances and exceptions. It is therefore important that you check the information with the authorities or consult a lawyer.
